Ever Leave a loved one on a Mountain, ALONE?

(people different than you and me)

This Just In:

Russ is a 28 year old military contractor and underwater demolitions expert friend of mine who likes to take his wife and young daughter out into the back country of the Smoky Mountains for extended stays, to get away from civilization. He's hardcore and so is his wife. They're not so much hardcore outdoorsy TEVA wearing, granola eating types but they do like their privacy. They're more like let's get away from, "the man" or "big brother" types that will go to any length to get "off the grid."

I'm checking facebook and notice Russ is online. He's supposed to be at least ten miles up a mountain from any road or cell tower, let alone a computer. So I ask, why is he down from the mountain so soon?

He says,
he got up the mountain and five miles from anywhere up a muddy road, the '87 Jeep Wagoneer 4X4 dies. Russ quickly determines while up some mountain, like MacGyver, that it's the alternator and the battery is dead. He sits his wife and child down, sets camp and breaks the news saying, "I'm gonna hike back to civilization get to a auto parts store and come back up for you." HE LEAVES THEM BOTH ON THE MOUNTAIN!!!

I ask, "are you worried about her?"
"No, she's got the .45 pistol, the 12 gauge shotgun with plenty of shells and more food and water to eat off of for about six days."

Whaaaaa? Guns? National Forest?
He doesn't enter the forest without weapons he says.

How did he get back?
He hiked all day, got down the mountain and then hailed a passing car, they drove him somewhere where he got another ride to pick up his other car. Then the parts places he went to said they could only get a new alternator, and special "belt" until tomorrow.

What does the guy who's left his family up on a mountain alone do when he can't make it back up there that evening? He drives home, hits facebook for fifteen minutes; chats up a friend to tell him what happened. Then, he leaves to go to Walmart to pick up a few things and plans on getting another 4X4 from a friend in the morning. His wife on the other hand doesn't know if Russ made it home alive or not and she's up the side of a mountain with her child, a busted Jeep and a tent. (oh, Russ said she's fine. She has an air mattress)

***Truthfully Russ IS worried about her being all alone, (black bears not withstanding) but he said, "she's a fighter and knows what I'm capable of, that's why she married me."

I expect very soon to read a terrible story about a missing woman and her child.... But I'm hoping never to read that headline.
"I wanna run with somebody"

Can we all think back to the time when our parents were blasting Whitney Houston singing, "I wanna dance with somebody?" If not than you survived the 80's far better than me. But along those lines, I wanna run with somebody, and I know just what to do.

Earlier this year or last, Mel and others bought Nike+ gear that would allow them to monitor their runs, pace, distance and stuff then compare them to other people we want to run against. Marvelous right? I wanted to do it back then, but somewhere between studying Organic Chemistry and other mindless college classes I fanned interest. Now, I'm gonna take my ill-gotten gains from my Ponzy Schemes I've perpetrated against the rich, like Stanford and Madoff and can afford to buy a Nike+ watch and "shoe fob."

It could be my bloated figure or the gradual lowering of my self-esteem but I need to get out there and exercise. It may be my impending nuptials awakening my urgency for fitness. Summers are as hot as balls, however I'd rather run in the summer than in the winter. So, no better time than now, right?

Who wants to run with me, or who'd let me start running with them? I don't even know what goals I should strive for but we'll see just how slow of a runner I am. Anyone else think they need a little more spring in their step; a little easier time getting up the stairs to work each morning?
Where are you going this Summer?

What are your plans for the Summer? Any vacations, or is it all work and no play?

I'll be in summer school at University of Tennessee from July 7th through August 8th.

THEN IT'S "DOWN TO DESTIN" for my fiancee and me.

We're planning on staying at the Pelican Beach resort from August 10th through 16th.
Event canceled after competitors flee

BRUSSELS -- The Belgian bodybuilding championship has been canceled after doping officials showed up and all the competitors fled.

A doping official says bodybuilders just grabbed their gear and ran off when he came into the room.

"I have never seen anything like it and hope never to see anything like it again," doping official Hans Cooman said Monday.

Twenty bodybuilders were entered in the weekend competition.

Cooman says the sport has a history of doping "and this incident didn't do its reputation any good."

During testing of bodybuilding events last year, doping authorities of northern Belgium's Flanders region found that three-quarters of the competitors tested positive.
